The Intensive English Program consists of six-credit-hour courses (three per term) for a total of 18 credits per term, as follows:
INTENSIVE ENGLISH
Term I: Core English 100 (4 weeks) + Core English 200 (4 weeks), Core English 300 (1 week)
Term II: Core English 300 (cont…) (3 weeks), Core English 400 (4 weeks), Core English 500 (2 weeks)
Term III: Core English 500 (cont…) (2 weeks), Core English 600 (4 weeks), Core English 700 (3 weeks)
Term IV: Core English 700 (1 week), Advanced English Skills 800 (4 weeks), Advanced English Skills 900 (4 weeks)
The Intensive English Program (IE) is a nine-term program to be completed in 9 months/36 weeks. It is divided into four terms of 9 weeks each. It is aimed at adult and young adult learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). It consists of a combination of Core English Areas (CE) comprising the four language skills -conversation, listening-comprehension, reading and writing- and three language supplementary areas of study -Survival English, Advanced English Skills, and TOEFL Test Preparation.
Explanation of Hours:
Each Term has 198 Clock Hours (CH) of Study. Clock hours are sixty-minute hours, consisting of:
81 Contact Hours: Clock hours of class when students are actually present in the classroom with the teacher
· 36 Contact Hours Monthly
· 9 Contact Hours Weekly
117 Lab Hours: Hours students use on their own to do lab work to complete supplementary work
· 52 Lab Hours Monthly
· 13 Lab Hours Weekly
Program DESCRIPTION
This program provides students with extensive coverage of the structures and vocabulary of American English, but reflects the fact that English is a language for international communication and is not limited to any one country or region. It also features communicative activities to enable the students to learn and use lively and natural language for everyday situations and for meaningful communication. The method combines natural language, everyday situations and practice of four language skills, listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on the development of oral interaction. Class practice is provided through conversation, oral drills, games, music, and other engaging activities. The course is supported by a combination of video, interactive audio programs, internet links, lab, full color textbooks, workbooks, and real life objects.
CORE ENGLISH (CE 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700)
Levels 1 through 7 of Intensive English. The objective is to provide students with extensive coverage of the structures and vocabulary of American English, but reflects the fact that English is a language for international communication and is not limited to any one country or region. The method combines natural language, everyday situations and extensive practice of all four skills – listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing- with an emphasis on the development of oral interaction. Practice is provided through active conversation, oral drills, games, music and other engaging activities. The course is supported by a combination of interactive audio and video programs, internet links, lab, TV, full color textbooks, workbooks, and real life object. Assignments are geared towards real life practice during daily activities in and out of the classroom. The use of social media is welcome
ADVANCED ENGLISH SKILLS (AES 800 and 900)
Levels 8 and 9 of Intensive English. This challenging program is geared towards advanced students who desire to perfect their English skills. The course will integrate all language skills focusing on advanced conversation, pronunciation, listening skills, composition, essay writing, and grammar practice. Materials comprise a compilation of excerpts from different sources, as well as, video and audio programs. The use of interactive audio and video programs, internet links, lab, TV, full color textbooks, workbooks, real life objects and social media add motivating tools to the program.
ELECTIVES:
LITERACY ENGLISH (LE-090)
Literacy English teaches students basic vocabulary, simple verb tenses, simple grammatical structures so students can begin using the language in a simple but effective manner in real-life situations. Learning activities are handled individually, in pairs or small groups and the four skills, reading, writing, speaking and listening-comprehension, are emphasized in every class.
SURVIVAL ENGLISH (SE-091)
This course aims at motivating students to use the language naturally and preparing them to participate in basic conversations. It introduces new vocabulary and the use of simple grammatical structures, so students can begin using the language in a simple but effective manner in real-life situations. This program provides speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing practice. Students start to develop effective speaking skills and to improve their pronunciation and fluency. Techniques used to develop listening-comprehension and conversational skills include basic oral drills and repetition. The use of interactive audio and video programs, internet links, lab, TV, full color textbooks, workbooks, real life objects and social media play a crucial role in the program.
ENGLISH CONVERSATION & ACCENT REDUCTION (ECAR 401, 501) - Core English 400 and 500 Supplements
Two sessions of four weeks each which provide further speaking, listening comprehension¸ and pronunciation practice for students participating in IE and those with some background in English, mainly interested in enhancing oral communication. The student will develop effective speaking and listening comprehension, through exhaustive oral practice and the acquisition of key phonetic rules, and by working on pitch, rhythm, linkage and sentence stress and intonation. The use of updated technologies play an important role in the improvement of the student´s conversational skills and fluency. Participation on social media encourages the use of the language.
BUSINESS ENGLISH (BE 601, 701) – CE 600, CE 700 Supplements
Two sessions of four weeks each. These are preparatory courses for international business executives, professionals, and business administration students and prospect students who are or will be conducting business in the global market. Emphasis is made on the lexicon of business, communications techniques, strategies and skills needed to succeed in business. The language is used in context deriving from audio and video programs, and excerpts from business journals and magazines. Tasks include drafting of business correspondence and style and in both oral and written communications. The incorporation of audio visual techniques to presentations, conference calls and the use of social media, are great tools for business students.
TOEFL TEST PREPARATION (TP 801 and 901) - CE 800 and 900 Supplements
Two terms of four weeks each, aimed at preparing international student who need to take the TOEFL Test, which US colleges and universities mandate. The program has two main objectives: TP 505 will provide a comprehensive review of areas such as, grammar structures, listening and reading comprehension, with an emphasis in speaking and essay writing for the new TOEFL exam. TP 506 provides an overview of the exam and test taking strategies, as well as, an exhaustive practice of sample TOEFL tests.
